Playa El Cocal is located at the km 37of the litoral road, right next to the city of La Libertad, at this area you find private residentials, very quiet enviroment, you find a couple hotels and hostels, also beach houses available for rent, this area is separated by the river, making the east side known as Cocal or Recodo and the next side at the west known as San Blas Beach, both very different, Cocal is sandy just in summers, the rest of the year in the rain season is rocky, San Blas is one of the only sandy beaches that keep the sand during the rain season in La Libertad area. The river mouth is what it make the amazing spot of Cocal, the side of Cocal where you will find more rocks is the main right hand pointtbreak, in the other side of San Blas, the sand also make some waves with a nice left section during the low tide, is a good place for beginners to learn to ride the white water without care about the rocks
Surf Spot
The surf in Cocal is very amazing but not consistence all year around, the conditions are similar than Punta Roca, it get flat during the summer, around december to beginings of March, anyway the beach break sections in both sides, Cocal and San Blas make a good option to ride some waves when the swell is not picking up.
This both spots are very different, Cocal is recomended just to be surfed in high tide because of its rocky bottom, but the wave is fantastic, is a prefect ride, strong wave with tube sections, perfect for intermediate to advance surfers when it has middle size, and for sure for advance when the swell gets big, with big swells currents can be a problem, making it hard to be surfed, the beach break section next to the point is very strong and powerfull.
The side of San Blas it work most of the time in low tide, the end of the rocks of the pointbreak and a boat ship under the water make a left section show up, it give you a soft waves in the begining and finally close up very strong at the sandy bottom of the beach, is a great place for bodyboarders to be able to get into the tubes and air. Both spots are totally uncrowd most of the time, If you plan to stay in this area you can be sure you won't find much people around, but because is not consistence you should be sure you come in a good season, as soon you find the best time to come the waves is really amazing, a perfect shape and a very fun wave, probably one of the best qualities very similar than Punta Roca.

Surf season
The pointbreak of Cocal can get as good as the best spots of the country, Punta Roca, Bocana or K59, but probably is one of the less consistence spot in the country, it needs a solid medium size swell, when is too small it get's totall flat and when is too big is a wave that is hard to surf. But in the other hand, the location is between two good beachbreaks and totally uncrowd. Is one of our favorite spot when we are looking to surf a good wave with less people in the water.
